Embedded & Hardware
One hiring market, two distinct profiles. Both sit among the fastest-growing and hardest-to-fill directions; keep firmware and physical-product engineering separate in the shortlist.
Demand
Separate roles
Hire Run two pipelines. Scarcity is shared; firmware and electronics are not interchangeable.
Candidate Demand is strong. Prove the exact layer you own: code, boards, bring-up, controls, or system integration.
Scope Hardware counts mix quarterly DefTech and June all-DOU data; Embedded uses March all-DOU volume and H1 competition. Do not compare the raw volumes 1:1.
Compensation
Hire Benchmark Embedded by level and sector. Do not reuse it as a Hardware salary table.
Candidate Separate wider-IT and DefTech benchmarks before setting expectations.
Scope Net monthly USD. DOU published no comparable 2026 Hardware salary split; the DefTech salary analysis covered 73 developers in total.
Skill signal
Hire Name the actual stack and constraints: C/C++, RTOS or bare metal, interfaces, memory, and target hardware.
Candidate C/C++ remains the hiring core. Rust is a useful forward signal, not a substitute for shipped embedded work.
Scope Language survey figures describe Embedded developers. Hardware roles need separate electronics, PCB, bring-up, robotics, or production evidence.
Hiring context
Both roles · DefTechHire State location, work format, booking, and production access early; these materially narrow an already small pool.
Candidate Confirm sector, location, work format, and employment conditions before comparing offers.
Scope DefTech-wide figures, not role-only counts. DOU reports that Hardware and Embedded remain the largest candidate deficit inside that market.
